San Andrés Golf Club — Stanley Thompson, 1945

Stanley Thompson, 1945 · 18 holes · Par 72 · 7,291 yards · ~2,600 m

San Andrés Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in Colombia and a rare example in South America of a course designed by Stanley Thompson, the legendary Canadian architect behind Banff Springs and Jasper Park Lodge. The 1945 layout sits west of Bogotá in Funza, on the western Sabana, and its design draws from Thompson’s links sensibility — wide flat fairways, strategic bunkering, and an emphasis on ground play that rewards the running shot.

The Design

Thompson’s style emphasizes options over forced carries: the fairways are generous, the routing uses the natural Sabana terrain, and the green complexes reward an aerial or a run-up approach depending on the wind. For visiting golfers used to North American parkland setups, San Andrés plays more like a classic British or Canadian course than a target-style modern layout.

How It Plays

At ~2,600 metres, the standard Sabana altitude effect applies: 10–15% additional carry on full shots and reduced spin on approach shots. Funza is on the open western Sabana, so wind tends to be more of a factor here than at courses tucked closer to the eastern cordillera. Mornings are typically calmer; afternoons can build steady wind across the open fairways.

Location & Access

San Andrés is in Funza, ~30 minutes from El Rincón de Cajicá and roughly 45 minutes from central Bogotá. From El Dorado International Airport (BOG), allow ~25 minutes — closer than most Sabana courses, which makes San Andrés practical for an arrival-day or departure-day round.

The club is private. Visiting play is arranged through reciprocal arrangements, IAGTO-affiliated operators, or tournament events.

Practical Notes

Caddie is mandatory. San Andrés pairs well with El Rincón de Cajicá (30 min) for a two-course Sabana day, or with the airport-adjacent itinerary for visitors who want to fit a round before or after an inbound or outbound flight.
