Club de Golf La Cima — Boris Sokoloff, 1990

Boris Sokoloff, 1990 · 18 holes · Par 70 · 6,074 yards · 3,000 m — Colombia’s highest golf course

La Cima is Colombia’s altitude showpiece. At 3,000 metres above sea level, it is the highest golf course in the country and one of the highest in the world. The 1990 Boris Sokoloff design routes through rolling Andean terrain in La Calera, on the eastern slope above Bogotá, using natural elevation changes and the surrounding mountain backdrop to create a distinctly different golf experience from the flatter savanna courses below.

The Course

The 6,074-yard par 70 layout looks short on paper — until you account for altitude. Effective playing distance is closer to 6,800–7,000 yards because the ball gains roughly 15% in carry at this elevation. What plays as a 150-yard 8-iron at sea level may need a pitching wedge here, recalibration that takes most visitors a full round to internalize.

Sokoloff also designed Pueblo Viejo, Guaymaral No. 1, and Club San Jacinto, making him one of the most prolific architects in Colombian golf. La Cima reflects his approach to working with mountain terrain rather than flattening it — fairways follow ridgelines and valleys, greens sit on natural shelves, and several holes use the steep topography for dramatic effect, with elevated tees offering long views across the cordillera.

How It Plays

The 3,000-metre elevation makes La Cima the most extreme altitude course in Colombia. Beyond the ~15% distance gain, the cool mountain air (10–18°C most of the year) and frequent morning mist set the playing conditions. Walking 18 holes here is physically demanding for golfers who haven’t acclimatized — most visitors find their first round more tiring than a typical 18-hole walk.

Wind is a constant variable: the course is exposed to mountain breezes that change direction as the sun moves and the valley heats up.

Location & Access

La Cima sits in La Calera, the mountain municipality directly east of Bogotá. Drive time from central Bogotá is 45–60 minutes via the La Calera road — a winding mountain route with several scenic overlooks. From El Dorado International Airport (BOG), allow 60–75 minutes.

The course is private. Visiting play is arranged through operators or reciprocal arrangements.

Practical Notes

Caddie is mandatory. Allow extra time on your first round to adjust to the elevation. La Cima pairs naturally with La Pradera de Potosí (also in La Calera at ~2,800 m, another high-altitude course) for a two-course high-altitude itinerary, or with a Sabana course like Rincón de Cajicá for a full elevation contrast.
